IKEA Dimpa Bag

I heard about this bag somewhere on the internet and from friends, so when I was in Singapore a few weeks ago, I got a Dimpa Bag in IKEA. It cost S$7.90 (US$6.00) a piece. I bought one as a potential alternative to my sturdy but bulky Vincita B-132 Bag.

As you can see below, the Brompton fits snuggly inside the Dimpa Storage Case. (Vincita, adopt these dimensions to your B-132 Bag, please!!! 65cm x 65cm x 22cm) I like it also that the zipper goes all the way to the side of the bag making it easier for one to fit the bike.
However, the sad thing about this product is that the material (Polypropylene) its made of is so thin and fragile! I'm scared to carry it using the attached strap for fear it my tear up. My god, the local sako/plastic hakot bag one can get in Divisoria (see item below) uses thicker material, and is way cheaper!
The Dimpa Bag has the right dimensions to fit the Brompton. The zipper's cool too. But I hope IKEA improves on the material that they use--its just too thin, even for its intended use as a spare tire bag.

So for now, whether for airplane, train or bus travel, the Vincita B-132 Bag is still my folding bike storage/travel bag of choice. Yes, it may be bulky, but at least its sturdy and has sufficient padding to protect my bike.

    2. It's really stronger than it looks. I've been using the same 10 dimpas for at least 7 years. I use them for laundry and everything else. The only tear I got over the years was stuffing it way past capacity with laundry. The thing that gives out is the zipper. I've had 2 of them give out one of the zippers. Since the other zipper works I still use them.

I also use dimpa bags instead of a suitcaste on short trips. I can just carry it over the shoulder and hang it up in the closet. That way I don't have to worry about bed bugs in hotels.

    3. BTW, the one with the tear is a really minor tear and I still use it too. :)

    4. Thanks for your feedback Paul. And I'm glad, after all this years, IKEA still carries the dimpa bag in its stores.

  2. Yes. It is really stronger than it looks. And the handle grips are longer such that one can strap it over one's shoulder to carry the bike around.
I have used in in holds of buses, on trains.
And recently, I used it to check-in & fly my Brompton for a riding stint in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Do pad up with some cardboard for extra cushionin.

    2. Hi, Kris,
Firstly, I must apologies fro the late reply to you, just saw it.
Instead of cardboard, we now us plastic Impra Boards instead of cardboards, These are cleaner (useful especially for countries like Australia and NZ where the customs are more fussy about dirt being brought into their country.
I hope you did a good time cycling in Hong Kong.

      Regards,

    1. Hi Robyn Choi May,
The Impra Boards should be available at most larger stationeries shop.
The following is a link to my blog on using the Dimpa bags with the Impra boards. Used this again for taking my Brompton over to Japan, NZ and the Batanes, Philippines.
